Mommie Dearest
Film icon Joan Crawford has everything—fame and fortune—but the one thing that eludes her is having her own children. Never accepting no for an answer, Joan finds a way to first adopt her daughter, Christina, and then, a few years later, her son, Christopher. Based on the book by Christina Crawford, “Mommie Dearest” depicts her childhood as anything but idyllic with the troubled movie star. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “Mommie Dearest”.
∙ It’s Christina’s birthday party. In the far view of the merry-go-round at the beginning of the scene, Joan can be seen riding the carousel. (Note the long brown hair and white dress. The scene cuts to a close-up of the carousel and she’s missing. But, she’s behind Christina when she asks her about the party.
∙ Joan is arguing with Greg after their dinner with L.B. Mayer. When Greg grabs her by the shoulders and starts to shake her, Joan’s left earring falls off. It cuts to a closer view (from behind Joan’s shoulder) and the earring is back on. She’s still wearing it in the close-up of her after he pushes her.
∙ Joan is complaining about the clothes hanging in Christina’s closet. During the scene there are stacks of clothes/linens on a shelf. Joan proceeds to toss all the stacks, except for one, into the floor before reaching for the hats. But, in the next close-up of Joan, the stacks of clothes are back in their original position.
∙ Angry about the way the bathroom looks, Joan tosses a cleaning rag in the floor and turns on the faucet. Christina’s hands are empty. Joan has another cloth in her hands and grabs the one on the floor when she’s telling Christina they’re going to clean together. Joan is shown sprinkling more cleaning powder on the floor but the view of Christina’s right hand shows she’s now holding one of the cleaning cloths.
∙ Also during the bathroom cleaning scene, the powder on the floor changes from the time Joan crawls through it and the following close-up of Christina crying on the floor.
“Mommie Dearest” (1981) stars Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid, Steve Forrest, Howard Da Silva, Mara Hobel, Rutanya Alda and Xander Berkeley. It runs 129 minutes and is rated R for frightening and intense scenes, mild language, violence and moderate alcohol use.
